Immunoglobulins for immune support

It is well known that immunoglobulins play an important role in the bodys natural defense against sickness through their ability to bind to a wide range of bacteria and viruses. The administration of isolated immunoglobulins may therefore support immune function in vulnerable groups such as infants, elderly and people with a defective immune system. Furthermore, enhanced immunity by oral administration of immunoglobulins has been shown in both postweaned piglets and calves, which gives a great potential of reducing the use of antibiotics in the farming industry.

Immunoglobulin G (IgG) from milk

A large number of studies have shown that immunoglobulins from cows milk (bovine IgG) can prevent gastrointestinal tract infections, upper respiratory tract infections, and lipopolysaccharid-induced inflammation in humans. Thus, isolated bovine IgG could be an excellent supplement for enhanced immunity.

Another possibility is to isolate IgG from cows vaccinated against a certain disease providing passive immunity to protect animals and humans from that disease.

Last, but not least, isolated bovine IgG can be used as colostrum replacement/supplement for newborn calves or piglets.

Immunoglobulins from animal plasma

Immunoglobulins from animal plasma is a heterogeneous group of proteins which mainly contain the IgG, IgA and IgM immunoglobulins. Immunoglobulin Y (IgY) from egg

Immunoglobulin Y (IgY), an analog to the mammalian IgG, is an abundant component of the egg yolk and is an important immune support for the developing chicken. IgY is a widely used food supplement and preservative and is under investigation as a supplement to new born farm animals as an alternative to the use of synthetic antibiotics.

Ovotransferrin

Ovotransferrin is a 77.7 kDa glycoprotein that constitutes 12 % of the total egg white protein. Ovotransferrin belongs to the transferrin protein family, and just like the homologous mammalian lactoferrin, it is a significant part of the chicken egg’s innate antimicrobial defense system against pathogens.
